“Community” is bringing out the big guns for Season 5. The NBC show has cast “Breaking Bad” actor Jonathan Banks for a recurring role on the bizarre comedy.

Banks will guest-star throughout the 13-episode season, appearing in all but two of the episodes (according to He will play one of Greendale’s many unusual community-college professors, Pat Nichols. Nichols is an intense criminology professor who seems to have a mysterious background in both police work and the military.

Since Annie (Alison Brie) has been inching slowly toward this field, that character provides the introduction in episode 2 of the upcoming season — that’s when her crime class begins.

Banks, best-known these days for playing Mike Ehrmantraut — a hitman and a fixer for drug dealers — on “Breaking Bad,” is just the latest in a long line of interesting professors to appear at Greendale. Previous members of the faculty include John Oliver (who has recurred as a lecherous psychology professor since the show’s premiere), Betty White (anthropology), Stephen Tobolowsky (a philosophical study of “Who’s the Boss”) and “The Wire” star Michael K. Williams (biology).

Also known for his regular role on “Wiseguy” in the late 1980s, Banks is an Emmy nominee for his “Breaking Bad” role.
