Shirley Bennett is packing up her book bag and saying goodbye to Greendale … for now.
“My dad needs daily care and he needs me,” says Brown. “The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn’t do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.”
Although Brown will be stepping out of her role, she is reportedly still open to the possibility of guest-starring in an episode, and has left the show on good terms.
“Yvette was an integral part of ‘Community’ and is irreplaceable,” says executive producers Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna in a joint statement. “We are sad to see her go and wish her the very best.”
After the news broke, Brown made sure to reach out to co-stars and fans to thank them for their support throughout the years.
“Thanks for the years of laughs & love @danharmon @joelmchale @gillianjacobs @dannypudi @alisonbrie @kenjeong @RashIsTVUgly & @donaldglover,” she tweets. “& thanks to the AWESOME #Community fans! You #HumanBeings are forever #StreetsAhead. Thanks for understanding my tough decision & your love. And thank you #SONY for your understanding. I will never forget what your kindness has done for my family.”
The actress is the most recent star to leave “Community,” and joins the ranks of Jonathan Banks (“Breaking Bad”), Donald Glover and Chevy Chase. She will appear next in “The Odd Couple” and “Benched” as a recurring character.
Season 6 of “Community” has been given a 13-episode season order by Yahoo Screen.
