The “Community” cast hit the stage at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday (July 24). Gillian Jacobs, who plays Britta, was actually brought to tears by the packed ballroom.
But when Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley on the show) thanked the audience for coming, series creator Dan Harmon had enough. “So now we’re pandering,” he joked.
It’s clear the “Community” crew are thankful for the audience it draws, but in return the audience gets a show that pushes boundaries.
So when Harmon was asked why audiences who didn’t watch Season 1 should tune into Season 2, he very confidently said three words that excited the crowd: “Apollo 13 homage.”
Harmon says the episode slated for Season 2 is very much in the vein of fan fave episode, “Modern Warfare,” in which the crew waged a paintball war and was directed by “Fast and the Furious”‘ Justin Lin. It was inspired by action films Harmon loves like his favorite, “Die Hard.”
“The action movie is the first place my brain goes,” says Harmon. “And the next is, well, we have to send them to outer space.”
“Apollo 13,” the 1995 film starring Tom Hanks, is about a moon-bound space mission that goes wrong. For the show’s “Apollo 13” episode, Harmon says there’s ways to get around actually putting the cast in space.
“There’s a way to do it that doesn’t actually break the reality of [the show],” says Harmon. “They don’t actually leave the atmosphere of the earth, but it’s going to be cool.”
