mary matthew downton abbey season 3 dan stevens michelle dockery Dan Stevens apologizes for 'Downton Abbey' Christmas Day deathAre you still mad about Dan Stevens choosing to leave “Downton Abbey,” thereby kind of forcing the writers to kill off Matthew Crawley just after his wife, Lady Mary, had given birth to their son?

Well, Stevens has sort of apologized for that.

“I’m sorry about that,” Stevens tells the Radio Times. “I think what emerged is that it’s an unwritten rule that you’re not supposed to die on British television on Christmas Day and that, specifically, was not my doing.”

Hmm. He is correct — Stevens did not write Matthew’s death-by-car-accident exit, which aired on Christmas Day in the United Kingdom.

But he still isn’t sorry about leaving, adding that it was the right thing to do.

“Everybody, including my wife, was incredibly supportive of the decision and it wasn’t made lightly or easily but it really felt the right thing to do,” says Stevens. “Leaving was a big career decision — a big life decision.”

What say you, “Downton” fans? Still mad?
