The Season 5 premiere of “Dance Moms” proved one thing: The Abby Lee Dance Company is a hot mess.
Correction: The dancers aren’t a hot mess; the actual group unity within the dance company is a hot mess. Sure, during the episode a handful of the girls might have taken home top solo prizes and the team might have won for best preteen group performance, but it still doesn’t make up for the fact that Abby Lee Miller and the moms seem to be all over the place.
Honestly, based on “99 Problems But A Mom Ain’t One,” the entire company seems fractured and divided. Abby is being sued by a former student, Paige; the company is in the middle of moving to Los Angeles; Christi and Chloe are nowhere to be seen; Kira and Kalani are back out of nowhere to fill the gap in the team; and, per usual, none of the moms are on the same page. Oh, and Abby is acting like she’s the ruler of the world. The only problem? She’s a pretty bad ruler.
Although Abby can teach the girls how to dance well, she seems to be totally scatterbrained. The entire first half of the episode is Abby coming up with all of these grand and “L.A.”-esque ideas and saying things like “there is a method to my madness” and “I think I know what I’m doing,” which just seems kind of delusional. She’s losing a grasp on her dancers and, as a result, she’s flailing.
The good news is that all of the dancers — you know, the non-adults on the show — are the most mature people on the show, which means, if Abby and the moms figure out how to calm down and put on a united front, then things might look up for the company.
As one of the moms said, “This nonsense has to stop.”
