dancing with the stars sean avery elimination reasons abc 'Dancing with the Stars' Season 18: Sean Avery's elimination was inevitable

On “Dancing with the Stars” Season 18, week 2, Sean Avery and Karina Smirnoff were eliminated from the competition. It couldn’t have been much of a surprise to “DWTS” fans, and it wasn’t a shock to Avery either.

But Avery’s reasons for the elimination, which he laid out on “Good Morning America” Tuesday (March 25), might not be quite accurate. Instead, he was eliminated because he didn’t work as a “Dancing with the Stars” contestant.

Like many eliminated “DWTS” contestants, Avery appeared on “GMA” the morning after his loss. Unlike most of them, the hockey star was actively angry about the situation. “I think we knew as of Monday last week that our fate was sealed,” Avery says in his interview. “I was upset with the package they had run the week previous … If you have a disagreement with producers, then generally that seals your fate quite early.”

But was Avery disagreeing with the show’s producers really the reason he was out of “Dancing with the Stars” in the first round? Honestly, it doesn’t seem like it.

Partner Karina Smirnoff may be convinced that Avery is a great guy and terribly funny, but it’s not like anyone else watching caught that. What the audience saw was an apparently cocky former athlete who pretty much refused to smile or display any sort of relatable emotion.

The thing is, even if Avery is the greatest guy in the universe, voters had no way to know that. Don’t get enough votes, and you are always doomed on “Dancing with the Stars” — no personal vendettas necessary!

“Dancing with the Stars” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/ PT on ABC.
