dancing with the stars american idol ratings 2013 abc fox 'Dancing with the Stars' tops 'American Idol' in same day ratings for 2013

“American Idol” is no longer the most-watched reality show on television. That honor now belongs to “Dancing with the Stars,” which narrowly beat “Idol” in same-day ratings during 2013.

“Idol” still led “DWTS” in the key adults 18-49 demographic by a good margin, and both shows, meanwhile, lost out to “NCIS” and football in the total-viewer race.

Live and same-day viewing for “Dancing with the Stars” was 13.9 million overall viewers, compared to 13.4 million for “Idol.” In both cases, these numbers indicate the ratings for performance shows only — results-show numbers were lower (13.1 million for “American Idol” and 12.9 million for “DWTS”).

But that’s not the really bad news for “American Idol” — total viewership for the reality competition dropped by about 1 million from 2012 to 2013. “Dancing with the Stars” felt a similar, although slightly smaller, drop.

The rest of the top 10 broadcasts in terms of live ratings were just about what you would expect. For the period ranging from Dec. 31, 2012 through Dec. 8, 2013, the Nielsen ratings winners were football broadcasts (claiming slots 1 to 3 on the rankings, as well as 6), “NCIS” (ranked fourth with 14.7 million viewers) and “The Big Bang Theory” (eighth at 13.2 million).

These numbers do not count DVR numbers after the initial broadcast day, nor do they factor in online viewing.
