Despite a voluntary axing, tonight’s “Dancing with the Stars” still kicked off a celeb. The executioners have no mercy.
Hosts Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris introduce the recap from last night. Aaron Carter took his lackluster performance very hard, poor thing. Tonight’s encore, introduced by Len, comes courtesy of Chuck Liddell & Anna T. with their Samba. For someone so scary, he’s adorable.
Queen Latifah comes out to perform a song from her new album while Cheryl and Maks dance. The track reminds me of Missy Elliot a bit. I like Queen Latifah and I’m glad she’s moving away from the standards she’s been doing, getting in touch with her old flavor.
After the leader board rundown, here come some results in no particular order. The lowest scoring male celebs and their partners are on stage. Tom Delay & Cheryl are safe. Boo! He’s injured, he needs to go home. Michael Irvin & Anna D. are in the bottom, which I expected, while Chuck & Anna T. are spared the harsh glow of the Spotlight of Doom.
Filler Package #1: the stars talk about the reality check of being on the show versus how they initially felt it’d be. Eh, wasn’t terrible, wasn’t particularly engrossing.
Tom and Sam finally talk to Tom Delay & Cheryl about his injuries…and how he can’t continue on in the competition. He was supposed to do the Texas Two-Step next week and Tom offers the chance to perform if he’s well enough by the finale. That’s nice. It’s good that he’s going home. You can’t dance on fractured feet…well, you can but it’s inadvisable. What’s not so nice is, despite Delay dropping out, a celeb will still be eliminated this week. I wonder if this saves us from a surprise double elimination later in the season?
On stage now are the highest scoring female celebs – Mya & Dmitry and Natalie Coughlin & Alec are safe but Joanna Krupa & Derek have found themselves in the bottom. Mwa-hahahacough…er, uh…how unfortunate.
The four remaining male celebs are lined up – Donny Osmond & Kym, Louie Vito & Chelsie, and Mark Dacascos & Lacey are safe but shockingly Aaron & Karina aren’t. Are they actually in the bottom or is this just one of those weird voter-check weeks?
The past celeb contestant that won the Design-A-Dance bit is Sabrina Bryant. Yay! I heart her, she totally got hosed her season. The next category to vote for is which pro to pair with her.
Now, it’s the Macy’s Stars of Dance segment with season 1 “America’s Best Dance Crew” champs the Jabbawockeez. They are so freaking awesome. They perform to a remix of Gene Kelly’s “Singing In The Rain,” complete with four Jabbas being lowered from the ceiling. In a bit of a surprise, Mark and Lacey unmask at the end. I knew there were a few more members than I remembered. Great number. I really like how they’re mixing up the styles in this segment.
Queen Latifah returns to sing “Ease On Down The Road” from “The Wiz.” She does a bit of moving with five dancers, including The Skip. I love this song. This is one of the most underrated musicals ever – though the theater version benefits from a young Stephanie Mills in the lead which wins over Diana Ross any day.
Filler Segment #2: Steve Wozniak, Matt Last-Name-I-Didn’t-Catch, and a toddler all attempted to predict a winner or the final two in a science vs. luck experiment. Steve’s math had Donny and Mya in the top while Matt’s had Aaron and Natalie if memory serves me (I’ll double check the West Coast feed later). The toddler’s pick was Melissa Joan Hart. Not improbable but my thought is she’ll finish somewhere around 5th place.
Debi Mazar & Maks are not safe but Kelly Osbourne & Louis and Melissa Joan Hart & Mark are. That’s two in a row for her but it’s not over yet. I think we all know who I want out.
Sadly, of the four couples in the bottom, Joanna & Derek are the first left off the hook. Sorry, she just rubs me the wrong way and I’m over it. Aaron & Karina are safe too leaving Michael & Anna D. and Debi & Maks in the Spotlights of Doom.
It’s the end of the road for Debi & Maks which totally bums me out because I like her. She was disappointed but she focused on the positives of her experience. They join Delay & Cheryl on the floor for their last dance to “Who Says They Can’t Go Home” a la Bon Jovi.
Your thoughts on tonight’s events? Do you think they should’ve foregone elimination? Would you want to switch Debi for anyone else? And how dope are the Jabbawockeez?
