Arquette tells Ellen that his healthy outlook on his failed marriage stems from remembering the good times he spent with Cox. “It’s really important to respect the time you’ve had together,” he says. “To not let resentment control your life and lead you to act out and use finances or children against each other. It’s just really important to sort of deal with your emotions. A lot of the emotions that you feel in a situation like that are actually rooted in things you experienced when you were younger. You know feelings, inadequacy that aren’t necessarily the right thing going on in your mind.”

Clearly, his time in rehab did wonders for Arquette’s outlook. “Part of my thing was being so hard on myself. I’m like the hardest person on myself. So until I started being able to recognize that voice and not take it as the truth and be kinder to myself and sort of love myself. Then you can love the people around you. You don’t have to get all pent up with all the anger that is connected to a really emotional, very difficult process,” he says.

As for his love life now, Arquette describes it as “Wow.”

“You can take that either way,” he adds.
