space oddity David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' becomes a kids' bookDavid Bowie fans will likely recall his 1969 song “Space Oddity” as a somewhat depressing, if catchy, affair. The song chronicles the extra-planetary explorations of one Major Tom who, at the end of the song, finds himself lost in space and facing certain death.

So it’s kind of a surprise that it took 42 years for the song to inspire a children’s book. But, thanks to illustrator Andrew Kolb, kids the world over will be able to delight in the tale of the intrepid astronaut.

Kolb re-worked the song by adding bright, upbeat drawings of Major Tom, ground control, the spaceship and the stars that “look very different today.”

Interested parents, or Bowie fans, can download the entire book for free at Kolb’s website,

The version isn’t the original, but we thought the embed was worth it for the official 1969 Bowie video in which Major Tom winds up in very different circumstances.
