debra messing divorce guilt gi Debra Messing's divorce guilt: 'I wasn't able to give my son the fantasy'

It was announced in late 2011 that actress Debra Messing was divorcing her husband of ten years, writer Daniel Zelman. At the time the couple said they had separated nearly a year earlier, but were still living together with their son, 9-year-old Roman.
Now she’s talking to More magazine (via People) about the guilt she still feels from the end of their union, and what’s causing it. “Part of me will always contend with guilt that I wasn’t able to give my son the fantasy that my parents were able to give me,” Debra explains.
“We both wanted it to last forever,” the “Smash” star says, “and it’s a sad thing that it wasn’t able to go the course.” Messing says both made sacrifices to try to salvage the marriage, it just didn’t work out.
Though divorced, the couple ultimately went about the split as amicably as possible. In fact, they still act as a family. “We had Thanksgiving together,” Messing says, “In my mind, we will be a nuclear family forever.”
