demian bichir savages premiere gi Demian Bichir adds Oscar cred to FX pilot 'The Bridge'It was somewhat of a surprise when Demian Bichir landed in the Best Actor competition at this year’s Academy Awards. Now the Mexican born actor is bringing his newfound Oscar cred to a lead role on FX’s drama pilot “The Bridge.”

Bichir — who earned the Best Actor nom for starring in the immigration indie “A Better Life” — will play a detective in Mexico who teams with a U.S. counterpart (Diane Kruger of “Inglourious Basterds”) to hunt down a serial killer operating on both sides of the border. In a release touting the casting, FX described Bichir’s character as “one of the last good men in a corrupt and apathetic police force that is outgunned by the powerful drug cartels.”

“[Bichir] instantly raises the level of authenticity to the story and this is a true casting coup. To have the biggest movie star in Mexico choose his return to television for this project speaks volumes about the quality of the writing by Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid,” says FX president and general manager John Landgraf.

Stiehm and Reid were equally enthusiastic in their statement, noting: “Demian’s on-screen intensity and deep understanding of Mexico are huge assets to the show. We literally wrote the pilot with him in mind.”

Bichir was most recently seen in Oliver Stone’s “Savages” and also had a recurring role on “Weeds” as Esteban Reyes.

“The Bridge” is based on Scandinavian series “i Bron” and the pilot will be directed by Gerardo Naranjo, who recently received critical acclaim for Mexican thriller “Miss Bala.” The cast also includes Annabeth Gish (“The X-Files,” “Pretty Little Liars”) and Ted Levine (“Monk”).
