It’s been eight years. But Meg Ryan is finally talking about what really destroyed her marriage to Dennis Quaid. Infidelity. Not hers. His.
In 2000, Ryan had a very public fling with “Proof of Life” co-star Russell Crowe. After that, her marriage to Quaid was over.
But Us quotes her comments in the new issue of Instyle: "Dennis was not faithful to me for a very long time, and that was very painful. I found out more about that after I was divorced.”
Crowe wasn’t the bad guy. “I think he took a big hit. But Russell didn’t break up the marriage. He was definitely there at the end, but it wasn’t his fault. I was a mess. I hurt him too at the end. I couldn’t be in another long relationship, it wasn’t the time for that. So I got out.”
So much for being America’s sweetheart.
The bad press may not have caused her divorce, but it did impact her career, which slowed considerably. Although she says she chose to take a break, adopt a little girl from China, explore the world. Oh, and let her famous shaggy short cut grow out!
"I’ve been famous for a long time, and these last years, there’s been a great lull. So it has been me throwing a backpack on, traveling a lot — it’s been fantastic."
And she’s not unhappy about not being the girl-next-door anymore.
"The girl next door to what?" she asks. "I never felt like a very conventional person.”
