dixie carter designing women julia sugarbaker 'Designing Women': Dixie Carter's 'The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia'“Designing Women” star Dixie Carter passed away Saturday, April 10 at the age of 70. She was a huge part of our childhood as the larger-than-life Julia Sugarbaker on “Women.”

Her rants were so fabulous that we once used her “Night the Lights Went Out” piece shown below for an audition for a play.

She was the backbone of the show, with her elegant Southern charm and class. It’s hard not to think she was Julia Sugarbaker in real life. Speaking of real life, though, her partner on the show Reese Watson was played by her real-life husband Hal Holbrook. They were also acting onstage together in Florida in “Southern Comforts” when she unfortunately passed away.

To remember Dixie, we would like to share with you the infamous scene in which Julia Sugarbaker defends her pageant-queen sister Suzanne (Delta Burke) from some nasty pageant girls. It’s one of her finest moments on the show.

RIP, Dixie Carter. We grew up with you and you will be missed.
