Maybe, says a Harvard Divinity School professor named Karen King who announced that she has found a new fragment of papyrus from the 4th Century that proves some early Christians thought Mary was Jesus’ wife.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, King presented a paper on the finding at a Coptic studies conference in Rome (Coptic refers to the ancient Egyptian Christians), and the resulting fervor has raised plenty of questions. The scholar says in the text she uncovered, Jesus refers to Mary as “my wife.” King is an expert in Christianity, and the CSM reports the scrap is “a copy of a gospel, probably written in Greek in the second century.

However, King is not saying that Jesus is married — just that it complicates the issue of love and marriage in Christianity. It’s the first evidence that some early Christians thought Jesus was married, even though Christian tradition says he was not (despite no evidence to uphold that as fact), the CSM reports.
