george zimmerman trayvon martin not guilty verdict gi Did the George Zimmerman jury do wrong by Trayvon Martin? pollWhen the not guilty verdict was read in the case of Florida vs. George Zimmerman, if your social media feeds are like ours, they were immediately filled with reactions of outrage, along with triumphant sighs of relief. The trial of the neighborhood watchman for the 2012 killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin has been a hotly debated hot button topic for more than one year. The situation comes to a head Saturday (July 13) as a six-person jury lets Zimmerman off the hook.

Zimmerman defense attorney Mark O’Mara tells the media, “We are ecstatic with the results. George Zimmerman was never guilty of anything.” However, CNN reports the president of the NAACP plans to pursue civil rights charges in the case, and it is likely Martin’s family will file a civil suit against Zimmerman. Newark, N.J. mayor Cory Booker tweeted a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “There is a higher court than courts of justice, and that is the court of conscience. It supersedes all other courts.”
Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder, but the all-female jury had the option to declare him guilty of manslaughter instead. What is your opinion on how the jury should have ruled?
