A high-altitude avalanche on Mt. Everest early Friday (April 18) has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, with four still missing, CNN reports. The avalanche comes just weeks before Joby Ogwyn is set to scale the mountain and leap off of it wearing a wingsuit for Discovery’s “Everest Jump Live.”
A spokesperson for Discovery tells Zap2it, “The avalanche last night on Mt. Everest is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with those who are lost and with their families. The immediate priority for Joby and the team is to assist the search and rescue efforts in any way possible.”
The avalanche took place just above basecamp, where Discovery is scheduled to debut “Everest: Live From Basecamp” on May 5. The special leads up to Ogwyn’s jump on May 11. No one from his crew was involved in the tragedy.
