gugu mbatha raw 320 'Doctor Who' actress goes 'Undercovers' for NBCNBC’s J.J. Abrams pilot “Undercovers” has found its female lead — and unless you’re a dedicated “Doctor Who” viewer, we’re guessing her name won’t be all that familiar.

Abrams has hired British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw to star opposite Boris Kodjoe in the pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show, co-written by Abrams and Josh Reims (“Brothers & Sisters,” “Felicity”), is about a married couple who work for the CIA.

The casting of Mbatha-Raw follows the Abrams tradition of casting relative unknowns in lead roles on his shows — think Keri Russell (“Felicity”), Jennifer Garner (“Alias”) and Anna Torv (“Fringe”). “Undercovers” will be Mbatha-Raw’s first role in an American series.

She played Tish Jones in four episodes of “Doctor Who” and also had a recurring part on the fifth season of “Spooks” (“MI-5” in this country). She’s also worked on several other British shows and in numerous stage productions in London.

Abrams is set to direct the “Undercovers” pilot, which will be his first time behind the camera on a TV show since he directed an episode of “The Office” in 2007.
