matt smith doctor who mom 'Doctor Who': Matt Smith's mom is 'mortified' he's leaving

Look what you’ve done, Matt Smith. You’re scaring your mother. Smith is set to leave “Doctor Who” at the conclusion of the Christmas special, “The Time of the Doctor,” and his mom may be more upset about it then he is.
In an interview with the BBC, Smith says shooting the Christmas special was “very emotional.” However, it’s his mom who seems to have had the biggest reaction. “My mother is mortified,” he says, “honestly she was at the front of campaign for me to stay and wasn’t happy when I said I was going to leave.”
Still, the man who has played the Doctor since 2010 adds, “When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go.” He says his last time putting on that familiar bow tie and walking onto the TARDIS set were sad, but he’s confident that the Doctor is in good hands with Peter Capaldi. “As a fan, I’m genuinely excited to see what he’s going to do because I think he’s going to do something extraordinary,” Smith says.
It might take a bit for him to shift back into the mindset of a fan, though. Matt reveals, “I think it was the same for David [Tennant] and I think it was the same for Karen [Gillan], when she watched Jenna [Coleman] come in. I don’t think it’s easy, but it’s not my show it’s the fans’ show, so I’ll be a fan and then it will be my show.”
“The Time of the Doctor” airs Dec. 25 at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America.
