The first video has been released from “Doctor Who’s” 50th anniversary and it’s creating quite a bit of mystery. In the photo, a woman has a painting uncovered for the Doctor (Matt Smith) and Clara (Jenna Coleman). She says the work is “Elizabeth’s credentials,” most likely meaning Queen Elizabeth I, who will appear in the episode. Update: As pointed out in the comments below, the voice presenting the painting to the Doctor and Clara sounds like it belongs to Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) of UNIT.
What is the painting of, though? It looks like a world being destroyed. There is no definite answer, but the most likely candidate seems to be it’s Gallifrey (the Doctor’s home world) during the Last Great Time War.
What implications will this have on the episode, and how does it involve John Hurt’s dark Doctor? Thus far, the consensus seems to be that the dark Doctor is likely a regeneration between the eighth (Paul McGann) and ninth (Christopher Eccleston), during the Time War.
The other question that remains is the woman with the very Tom Baker-esque scarf. She was also seen in the new images from the episode. Is she a Doctor fanatic, essentially a Whovian in that world?
So many questions that need answers. “The Day of the Doctor” airs November 23.
