While it’s certainly unfortunate, since the show was refreshing, original, and darkly funny, it hardly comes as a surprise — ABC had been shifting the show around on its schedule and airing episodes out-of-order, so it was tough for fans to keep up.

While this isn’t technically a cancellation until ABC announces its 2013 line-up, fans should take it as such. “Sad to say ABC has pulled #Apt23 and will not be airing the 8 remaining episodes any time soon,” series star James Van Der Beek tweeted on Tuesday. “Translation: we’ve basically been cancelled.”

Van Der Beek feels that most fans of the show watched online or via DVR, which led to low ratings. “I know most of you watched us on your own time & platform and that
the competitive network scheduling game is irrelevant to you,” he says. “But network TV is a business dictated by Nielson ratings. And while
that’s an antiquated business model, it’s the only one they’ve got. Thanks to all who tuned in. We had a blast making it. Can’t imagine a
more fun work environment with better people. But onto the next..”

Ever the classy guy (Mitch Leery raised him right), Van Der Beek even urged fans not to turn against ABC — even though they certainly didn’t help matters when it came to scheduling. “And please, no bashing ABC. While I’m sure no one there would say they think they nailed it when it came to programming #Apt23 this year,” he writes, “You’ve got to give ABC props for ever picking us up in the first place. They took a shot at something original & edgy. I respect them for it.”
