After Dumb Starbucks, a parody coffee shop, appeared in Southern California on Saturday Feb. 8), many assumed it was a TV stunt of some kind. Those people, it seems, were right. It was revealed at a Monday news conference that the person behind the shop is “Nathan For You” star Nathan Fielder.
During his appearance at the store, Fielder wore a Dumb Starbucks apron and said they would soon be expanding the brand to Brooklyn, KTLA reports. However, an hour later the location was shut down by Los Angeles County health officials for operating without a proper license.
As for why Starbucks hasn’t been able to close the business, the store meets the minimum requirements for being considered a parody by placing the word dumb in the name. Fielder says this allows him to use the name, drinks and logo of the popular coffee chain. Outside of the above video and the news conference, Fielder hasn’t addressed Dumb Starbucks.
The parody certainly isn’t Fielder’s first time messing with the general public. He’s also well-known for his Twitter pranks, including asking his followers to “accidentally” text their parents looking to buy drugs.
