When Infinity Ward launches “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” they’re going to be unleashing a fresh, new take on the popular first-person shooter series. It’s not so drastic a change that “Call of Duty” fans will be lost, but there are definitely some new tactics players will have to employ to succeed.
“Ghosts” takes place 10 years after a catastrophic event more or less brought on the end of the United States’ position as a super power. The game follows two brothers that are members of a secretive squad known as the Ghosts.
They are joined by, of all things, a service dog named Riley. In an extended preview of the game, shown to Zap2it at E3, developers played through two separate levels. The first took place in No Man’s Land, which was just outside the ruins of San Diego, Cal.
The brothers and Riley are tracking groups of men in hazardous materials suits, taking them down. As they explore the area, which looks like it was ravaged by an earthquake, they seem to be trying to figure out the intentions of the men.
It’s this part of the game where Riley is an asset. He’s not just a regular dog, he’s trained and loaded with gear. He has a battle vest, which keeps him safe from bullets, and an earpiece allowing him to receive voice commands from long distances. He also has a vibrating collar that allows him to be controlled with non-verbal commands. Using a tablet computer, the brothers can control his movements and use him as a scout via a mounted camera.
He’s good for more than just scouting though, as he can also bark to draw attention and attack, killing bad guys that are in the way.

The second level that was shown was something completely new for the franchise. There has been limited underwater travel in the series before, but “Ghosts” is submerging the action as well. There are underwater weapons, battling with enemies and even covert actions as you try to avoid being detected on sonar.
Whereas “Call of Duty” has seemingly always been about making an impact and littered with explosions, “Ghosts” is more focused on staying hidden and only attacking when necessary. That’s not to say there isn’t any big fighting action, as there’s plenty. However, there also looks to be an emphasis on playing smart, rather than loud.
“Call of Duty: Ghosts” will be released November 5 for PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and One, Wii U, and Windows PCs.
