The final day of of the annual Electric Zoo Festival in New York City, Sunday (September 1), was canceled after two deaths during the first days of the event, believed to be linked to drugs. Additionally, four others were left critically ill and are being treated for overdoses. It’s the fifth year of the electronic music festival
The deaths appear to have been cause by overdoses of MDMA, also known as Molly, the New York Daily News reports. City officials recommended to the event’s promoters they call off the final day after the deaths, which they agreed to.
The festival’s organizers posted a statement on their website, reading, “The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.” Security turned away fans as they arrived for the day’s festivities.
An announcement about getting refunds for those who had tickets to Sunday’s show is expected to be made soon.
