Ellen DeGeneres‘ ads for J.C. Penney began airing during the 84th annual Academy Awards. They’ve been mired in controversy ever since Penneys announced DeGeneres as the spokesperson and the organization One Million Moms denounced the company and demanded her removal because she’s a lesbian.

But J.C. Penney stood its ground and now the commercials have started. The theme seems to be transporting Ellen back to another time, when shopping was done differently. In the first one, Ellen goes back to the Old West, where she goes looking for a coupon (or “cue-pon”) and the old-timey people think she’s reaching for her gun. It wasn’t laugh-out-loud funny, but it was cute.

However. The second one had Ellen going back to a black-and-white 1950s sitcom set, where a couple are sleeping in separate twin beds and Ellen is there on the other side of the husband. Do you think the commercial meant to do a little tongue-in-cheek polygamy reference? Or was it incidental.

We’d like to think it was on purpose. Here are all the commercials for your perusal, in case you missed any.
