jimmy kimmel don mischer tca gi Emmys 2012: Host Jimmy Kimmel and producer Don Mischer on keeping the show movingThe Emmy Awards broadcast is still close to two months away, but producer Don Mischer and host Jimmy Kimmel have begun discussing how they want the show to look.

“I want it to be jazzy from beginning to end,” Kimmel joked Friday (July 27) at the Television Critics Association press tour. “I don’t have a ton of control over how things go, but what I do know is I’d like to be part of the show throughout.”

Kimmel is not a fan of awards shows where the host disappears for long stretches, and he hopes the Emmy broadcast affords him the chance to “comment on things as they’re happening.”

“Hopefully I’ll be able to insert myself in the entirety of the broadcast,” he says.

Mischer notes that in a three-hour broadcast that includes 26 awards presentations, the host’s segments and other scripted pieces (the in memoriam tribute, for instance) all have to fit within about 22 minutes.

“We want to keep the show paced really quickly and keep it funny,” Mischer says. “… How we do that and how Jimmy weaves himself in and out of the award presentations, bringing people on, making comments on somebody who just won — that’s what makes these things move.”

The Emmys will air on ABC on Sunday, Sept. 23.
