The first award of the night at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday (Sept. 22) kicked things off in a surprising fashion with an upset win in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Even more surprising? Winner Merritt Wever‘s acceptance speech (or lack thereof).
After scoring a win over “Modern Family” favorites Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen, Wever took her statue from presenters Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and began her speech. “Thank you so much,” she said. “Um, thank you so much. I gotta go, bye.”
And with that, as a stunned audience laughed, the “Nurse Jackie” actress left the stage in what will likely go down as the shortest acceptance speech in Emmy history. If only more winners would follow suit.
What did you think of Wever’s surprising win and her even more surprising speech?
