modern family emmys win Emmys 2013: 'Modern Family' wins Outstanding Comedy Series

While some of the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards were shocking, one that was unsurprising was “Modern Family’s” Outstanding Comedy Series win.

The ABC sitcom has dominated this category for years, winning the award four times in a row. What was surprising on Sunday (Sept. 22) was how the cast of “Modern Family” was shut out for the first time in history in the individual actor categories

For its first three seasons, at least one member of the cast won a statue, though surprising upset wins in both Supporting Actor and Actress categories ended that streak. “Nurse Jackie” actress Merritt Wever beat both Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen, while “Veep” actor Tony Hale beat Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ty Burrell and Ed O’Neill earlier in the night.

Another shocker? “Modern Family” showrunner Steve Levitan‘s onstage burn at the Emmys — you know, the show that just gave him an award? “This may be the saddest Emmys of all time, but we could not be happier,” Levitan said as he accepted his award. He also thanked the bullies, gym teachers, and popular kids who made fun of the cast and crew growing up, for they are the ones who inspired them to go into comedy in the first place.
