2014 emmys best comedy big bang veep louie silicon valley orange modern family Emmys 2014: Who should win Outstanding Comedy Series?

When the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are given out, one of the biggest surprises of the night could be in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series. From repeat winner “Modern Family,” to critical favorite “Louie,” to the surging “Orange Is the New Black,” to the popular “Big Bang Theory,” to the dark-horse nominees, “Silicon Valley” and “Veep,” it’s anybody’s race.

“Modern Family” is of course the behemoth in this category. With four straight wins for Best Comedy, this is the show for the others to beat — even if critical praise has dwindled in recent years. Considering that “Modern Family” has not been winning other awards this season, this could be the end of the run.

“Louie” could therefore be the frontrunner in the Outstanding Comedy category. Louis C.K.’s virtual one-man show garners rave reviews every season and incredible episodes like this year’s “So Did the Fat Lady” make this a strong contender.

That doesn’t mean that “Orange Is the New Black” should be counted out though. Recent events have been showering this buzzy Netflix show with awards lately — Uzo Aduba’s guest-starring role won at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Then there’s “The Big Bang Theory.” With ratings that might be equal to the sum of all the other shows’ numbers, the popularity factor is certainly there. But that can work against a show in an awards’ race, and “The Big Bang Theory” has historically suffered when it came time for comedy awards.

Two premium cable comedies round out the list. “Veep” has the better chance of the two, having won acting Emmys for Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale in past years. “Silicon Valley” was the big surprise when nominations came out and has little chance of winning in its first season — much to the dismay of the comedy’s devoted fans.
