Street performer Dan Sandler, who dons the character of “Evil Elmo” in cities across the country, was arrested Wednesday (June 5) for trying to extort $2 million from the Girl Scouts, reports the AP.
Sandler pleaded not guilty but was held on $200,000 bond in Manhattan on charges of attempted grand larceny. Sandler, who also goes by the name “Adam Sandler,” reportedly began sending harassing emails and voice mails to a Girl Scouts supervisor he met while working a temp job for the organization.
Sandler threatened the supervisor, saying he would spread rumors about sex abuse in the Girl Scouts unless it gave him a high-paying job or made him a millionaire.
One email is quoted as saying, “I want a telecommute job from home of life at 150K. Or a two million dollar
cash settlement. As you know, the newspapers like to cover my evil Elmo
Assistant District Attorney Lauren Littman says Sandler’s emails became “increasingly alarming and bizarre,” while the attorney for the defendant says Sandler has “mental health issues” and that his rantings were never a real threat.
This is the same Evil Elmo who was arrested last year for his profanity-laden, anti-Semitic rant in New York.
