seth macfarlane hr 'Family Guy' Seth MacFarlane muses on ending the show, possible 'Star Trek' reboot

Family Guy” mastermind Seth MacFarlane has pulled off some pretty impressive feats. It isn’t common to have three prime-time shows run back-to-back-to-back with your name as creator. Nor is it common for a comedian to put out a well-received big band album. But perhaps MacFarlane’s most impressive feat is guiding “Family Guy” back from cancellation to its current role as a cultural juggernaut. And now, it seems, he may be ready to put “Family Guy” back among the cancelled.

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, MacFarlane muses on the lifespan of his flagship series:

“Part of me thinks that ‘Family Guy’ should have already ended. I think seven seasons is about the right lifespan for a TV series…I talk to the fans and in a way I’m kind of secretly hoping for them to say we’re done with it. There are plenty of people who say the show is kind of over the hill…but still the vast majority go pale in the face when I mention the possibility.”

Regardless of “Family Guy’s” future, MacFarlane’s plate is full. He is rebooting old TV classics “The Flintstones” as well as PBS science series “Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey.” But if MacFarlane has his way, he would reboot another classic TV property — “Star Trek.”

“I don’t know who would give me the keys to that car…but I’d love to see that franchise revived for television in the way that it was in the 1990s: very thoughtful, smartly written stories that transcend the science fiction audience.”

Stewie meets Captain Picard? We wonder what the results could possibly be…
