The ever-expanding umbrella of Comic-Con International has grown a little more: It will now apparently take in best-selling erotic fiction as well.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” author E.L. James will be in San Diego for a book signing on the opening day of Comic-Con, publisher Vintage Books says. James will sign copies of her books at the convention center on Thursday, July 12; tickets (which are free) will be required.
The signing will be James’ first on the West Coast. It’s also a curious fit for Comic-Con — the convention hasn’t been strictly about comic books for a number of years now, but attendees are generally interested a different definition of the term “graphic novel.”
Then again, the “Fifty Shades” books have sold 16 million copies since Vintage acquired the rights earlier this year, and the story began its life as “Twilight”-based fan fiction before James rewrote it with original characters and became a publishing phenomenon.
Comic-Con runs from July 12-15.
