A.J. Clemente was fired from his new job as news anchor at KFYR, North Dakota’s NBC affiliate, when he was caught on-air uttering expletives as the news broadcast opened. In a broadcast clip that went viral online, Clemente is introduced as the new weekend anchor, while he mutters f*** and s*** under his breath. He says he was practicing hard to pronounce names from the top story about the London Marathon.
Now it seems the unemployed journalist is parlaying his viral fame into network opportunities. Clemente sat with Matt Lauer and Savanna Guthrie on the “Today” show Wednesday (April 24) to plead his case. The anchors defended Clemente, rattled off his resume highlights and gave him a chance to read news copy from the teleprompter.
Later, he dropped by for a visit with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. “You’re a native New Yorker. And one thing about New Yorkers, we believe in giving second chances,” Strahan tells Clemente. “So, we have a challenge for you, if you’re willing to accept it.” Clemente accepted the gig, a one-night stand as a red carpet correspondent for “Live with Kelly and Michael.” He will work the crowd at the premiere of “Love Is All You Need,” starring Pierce Brosnan.
Clemente’s next stop is at the “Late Show with David Letterman” Wednesday night. Letterman already gave a nod to the fired anchor, basing his Top 10 List on Clemente Monday night (April 22). Take a look:
