floyd mayweather getty Floyd Mayweather passes on Manny Pacquiao, will fight Miguel Cotto on May 5While he postured and taunted as only he can, when it came down to Floyd Mayweather actually fighting Manny Pacquiao, the boxer took a pass. Instead Mayweather’s next match will be against Miguel Cotto on May 5 in Las Vegas.

The boxer announced his plans on Wednesday (Feb. 1) for the bout at the MGM Grand. The match will determine the title holder for the WBA super welterweight belt.

The date had long been reserved for a Mayweather fight, but the match came into doubt when he was convicted of domestic violence and harassment. He was to begin a 90-day sentence on Jan. 6, but Mayweather was granted a six-month delay so that he could train for and meet these obligations.

“I’m just happy to be fighting May 5,” Mayweather tells the Associated Press. “They granted me one fight. I need to conduct myself like a gentleman and do everything that the court ordered and then come back in front of them and show them that I deserve to have a license for a whole year.”

As for the Pacquiao issue, this will certainly be a disappointment to many boxing fans who were rooting for the dream fight. The bout seemed like it might have a chance when Mayweather began taunting Pacquiao on Twitter, calling him a “punk.” But it’s not in the cards.

“He really doesn’t want to fight,” Mayweather says.
