thierry costa suicide survivor French 'Survivor' doctor Thierry Costa commits suicide after contestant's death

French broadcaster TF1 has announced some sad news: doctor Thierry Costa, who worked on the French version of “Survivor,” has committed suicide.

This comes after the news that contestant Gerald Babin, 25, died on the same day the new season of “Survivor” started filming in Cambodia. Babin suffered from cardiac arrest on March 22 after participating in a tug-of-war challenge. The new season of French “Survivor” was then cancelled.

Following Babin’s death, many accused Costa and his production company, Adventure Line, of negligence. According to reports, Babin was denied immediate medical attention for up to nine minutes so shooting wouldn’t be interrupted.

The 38-year-old doctor reportedly left a suicide note and blamed the media for smearing his name. “I am sure I treated Gerald with respect as a patient and not as a contestant,” he wrote. TF1 released a statement saying it “shares the pain” of the Costa family.

“We have learned with dismay that Dr. Thierry Costa passed away in Cambodia today,” the statement reads. “His high level of professionalism and humanity towards participants and production teams has always been unanimously recognized.”
