carla hall the chew abc From 'Top Chef' to 'The Chew,' Carla Hall talks soap fan feedback

Soap fans, we’re just as sad about ABC canceling “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” as you are, but don’t take it out on Carla Hall.

The 47-year-old model-turned-chef is one of the most charming and hilarious contestants in “Top Chef” history.

Starting Sept. 26, she’ll parlay her two-season stint on the show into a full-time hosting gig on ABC’s “The Chew.” And as Hall told Zap2it and other press at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, the food-centric talk show’s recently-vacated afternoon time slot carries a lot of baggage.

“I get the tweets from these wonderful and passionate people, and I understand,” says Hall. “They’ve been watching soaps for half their live and they’re very passionate. I hope that what we have for them is that takeaway that everybody does eat. Everybody is on a budget. Everyone is trying to do something different every day. Hopefully this works in their lives as something they can use.”

We’re guessing a lot of those passionate people have been “All My Children” fans, since “The Chew” will be taking the soap’s 1:00 p.m. ET spot. But any negative feedback has not dissuaded Hall from being excited about the show, something she sums up quite well.

“When I talk about ‘The Chew,’ I tell people it’s a combination of ‘The View’ meets ‘Friends’ meets ‘Iron Chef,” says Hall. “It’s a lot of meeting.”

A live talk show, “The Chew” will incorporate celebrity interviews, discussions of healthy living and roughly two cooking segments in every episode. And those familiar with Hall know that her recipes will focus on comfort food, something she reaffirmed her passion for on “Top Chef.”

“I learned a lot about myself,” she says. “When you are around that many chefs, you learn what your perspective is and sort of who you are when it comes to food.”
