gabby giffords mark kelly gi Gabby Giffords tour: Sandy Hook families, George H.W. Bush and target practice

As part of a week-long gun control tour, former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords shot a gun for the first time since she was ambushed and shot in the head during a Tucson, Ariz. area public appearance in 2011.
Giffords took part in target practice in Las Vegas, Alaska and New Hampshire as part of her seven-day “Rights and Responsibilities Tour” with husband Mark Kelly, a former astronaut.
ABC News reports the couple had dinner with former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush at there home in Kennebunkport, Maine. The senior President Bush famously resigned from the NRA in 1995 after the group compared the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to “Nazis.” Bush wrote at the time, “[The comparison] indirectly slurs a wide array of government law-enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.”
One focus of Giffords and Kelly’s tour is tour is to promote stricter background checks for firearm purchases. Kelly cites recent research, saying, “We have found that a lot of criminals buy guns at gun shows and over the Internet and that needs to change.”

Giffords brought along family members of some of the victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre to her New Hampshire and Maine tour stops. Earlier she told the crowd in Nevada, “Democrats and Republicans, everyone. We must do something. Fight, fight, fight.”
