gabrielle giffords visits sandy hook families Gabrielle Giffords to meet with Sandy Hook familiesFormer U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived being shot in the head during the mass shooting at her rally in Arizona two years ago, is visiting Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School last month.

The Connecticut lieutenant governor’s office announced Thursday (Jan. 3) that Giffords will attend a private event at a local home on Friday (Jan. 4). The event will have no media access.

Since retiring from Congress to focus on her recovery, Giffords has begun campaigning for stricter gun control laws, a debate which has come even more to the forefront after last month’s attack in Newtown.

It has been three weeks since the deadly shooting. Thursday was the first time the over 400 children from Sandy Hook who escaped without physical harm returned to school, being bussed over to a refurnished unused middle school in nearby Monroe.

“Most of the kids were excited,” Police Lt. Keith White tells NBC News. “They
were anxious to get into the hallways and meet up with the other kids,
and you could see the teachers had the same response.”
