When “Game of Thrones” viewers pick up with their favorite characters again in Season 4, they’ll find Arya continuing in her travels with the Hound. But while that relationship might have at first started with the Hound keeping Arya around so he could sell her off to her family later, Maisie Williams says that there’s definitely mutual respect between the two characters this season.
“She respects him more than she’ll ever let on, and she does kind of like how brutal he is, but hates the fact that it’s to the wrong people, in her opinion,” Williams tells Zap2it. “She hates that he’s so sour to her, but then worked for the king for his whole life. She respects his attitude, but hates the fact that she gets the brunt of it. But she’d never let him know that.”
She continues, “She’s constantly sarcastic and digs at him. They’re not friends at all, but it’s almost, at the end of the day, they’re better off together. But they’ll never say that. They would never mention that ever to anyone.
While the Hound has a soft spot for Arya’s older sister Sansa, he also has one for her. That’s something Williams says Arya recognizes in her traveling companion.

“Definitely, especially now that she knows the Hound’s got a bit of a weak spot for her, and he did actually help her out and he didn’t need to help her out at the Red Wedding,” she explains. “He could have just let her run in there and get herself killed, but he hit her over the head, which actually was the better option.
“I think now that she realizes they’re stuck together, she’s a lot less fearless of the things she was afraid of before,” she continues, “and also the change in her as well. I think she lays it down to the fact that she’s with the Hound and so she’s safe, but mentally what’s going on is she’s more ruthless now and she’s not scared of how she’s going to feel about things anymore because nothing, there’s just nothing there.”

“Game of Thrones” Season 4 premieres on HBO on April 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
