“Game of Thrones” fans, meet your Mace Tyrell. George R.R. Martin confirmed on his blog that actor Roger Ashton-Griffiths will play the father of Margaery and Loras Tyrell and son of Olenna Tyrell in the upcoming Season 4 of the hit HBO series.
This puts to rest rumors that Mark Gatiss will play the Tyrell patriarch. When Zap2it caught up with Gatiss at a San Diego Comic-Con party, he told us then that he had filmed for a week in Belfast. That was a major clue that Gatiss wasn’t playing Mace, and gave some context for the locations his part could be set in. One theory is that Gatiss is playing one of Balon Greyjoy’s brothers, likely Aeron (though that would mean Gatiss wore quite the wig). He also could play a character at the Eyrie, since that is a location Season 4 is returning to, or someone else we haven’t even thought of yet.
Meanwhile, there’s some speculation that Joseph Gatt filmed a role in the new season of “Game of Thrones.” Winter Is Coming broke the news, but HBO has not yet confirmed to Zap2it that Gatt is in fact in the show. His potential role has not been revealed, though some believe he could have played Styr the Magnar of Thenn because he posted on his Facebook page that he filmed scenes in Iceland.
The only other actors cast for “Game of Thrones” Season 4 right now are Pedro Pascal as Oberyn Martell and Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand. Of Pascal’s casting, star Kit Harington tells Yahoo TV, “I haven’t seen him in costume yet, but I have had dinner with him a couple of times. He’s a lovely man. He’s going to be brilliant. It’s an amazing character and quite the story line. You’re going to enjoy it. [Fans] won’t be disappointed, Pedro Pascal is the man for the job.”
“Game of Thrones” returns to HBO in Spring 2014.
