natalie dormer gi 'Game of Thrones' star Natalie Dormer joins 'Elementary' as Irene Adler“Elementary” is adding another iconic character to its modern take on Sherlock Holmes, landing Natalie Dormer as Sherlock’s former love Irene Adler.

Dormer is set for a three episode arc leading up to the two-hour season finale on May 9. Her arrival may unlock some of the mysteries of Sherlock’s past. The CBS press release touting Dormer’s casting describes Adler as “Sherlock’s first and only love in London. Her mysterious murder by the hands of Moriarty caused his downward spiral into drug addiction.”
“We’re moving to the next chapter in our show – and in some ways, to a previous chapter in Holmes’ story,” “Elementary” creator Rob Doherty said in the release. “Irene Adler is perhaps the most pivotal relationship in Sherlock’s life, and I can’t think of an actress better suited to the challenge than Natalie.”

“Elementary” stars Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson. It has already been renewed for Season 2.

Dormer currently co-stars as Margaery Tyrell on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (which begins filming Season 4 later this year) and previously played Anne Boleyn on Showtime’s “The Tudors.”

The character of Irene Adler was recently portrayed by Rachel McAdams in the “Sherlock Holmes” films starring Robert Downey Jr. and by Lara Pulver on the BBC’s ongoing series “Sherlock.”
