Longtime “Today” show movie critic Gene Shalit is currently facing criminal charges after falling asleep at the wheel and driving his car into the front of a Lenox, Mass. home. No one was hurt, and the homeowners were not present at the time of the crash.
According to the Saratoga Springs, N.Y. paper The Saratogian, Shalit drove his Honda Element into a utility pole, then swerved and crashed into the front of a house around 12:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday, Oct. 24. There’s minor damage to the facade of the home.
Lenox Police Chief Stephen O’Brien, who was first on the scene after the accident, tells local paper the Berkshire Eagle that Shalit admitted he had fallen asleep at the wheel. He’s facing a charge of driving negligently, which could lead to a fine or even a jail sentence of up to two years, and his license could be revoked or suspended, reports the paper.
Shalit, 86, retired from his post on TV in 2010 after 37 years on the morning show and was not hurt in the accident.
