gene simmons suicide depression addiction 4th and loud gi Gene Simmons to drug addicts, depressed people: 'Kill yourself'

Gene Simmons, the famous bassist for Kiss and star of reality shows like “Gene Simmons Family Jewels” and “4th and Loud,” has no sympathy for addiction or depression. As the legendary rocker puts it in a recent interview, “Kill yourself.”

The rather controversial comments come from a July 31 interview with Song Facts and were inspired by mention of some of Simmons’ former bandmates. When asked if he keeps in touch with those no longer in Kiss, Simmons begins to rant about a person who “sees themselves as a victim.”

“Drug addicts and alcoholics are always: ‘The world is a harsh place,'” Simmons explains. “My mother was in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany. I don’t want to hear f*** all about ‘the world as a harsh place.’ She gets up every day, smells the roses and loves life. And for a putz, 20-year-old kid to say, ‘I’m depressed, I live in Seattle.’ F*** you, then kill yourself.”

Simmons goes on to cite the example of someone threatening to jump from a ledge: “Are you kidding? Why are you announcing it? Shut the f*** up, have some dignity and jump! You’ve got the crowd,” the rocker says.

Among those who have already expressed displeasure at Simmons’ harsh words is Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx. Sixx first objected via Twitter:

Later, Sixx explained more clearly on his “Sixx Sense” radio show: “I like Gene. But in this situation, I don’t like Gene,” he says (as quoted by Rolling Stone). “I don’t like Gene’s words. There is a 20-year-old kid out there who is a Kiss fan and reads this and goes, ‘You know what? He’s right. I should just kill myself.'”

Considering the prominence of suicide in recent news, many might take issue with Simmons’ feelings on the matter.

“4th and Loud” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
