george lucas steven spielberg bunny ears gi George Lucas on 'Star Wars 7': Disney is 'negotiating' with Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill

While Carrie Fisher is still flopping back and forth on whether or not she will be in “Star Wars: Episode VII,” George Lucas has come forward to set the record straight. He confirms that he was in talks with stars Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill to return to the “Star Wars” franchise before Disney even announced its acquisition of Lucasfilm.

“We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison — or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on,'” Lucas tells Bloomberg Business Week. “Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.”

He adds, “I won’t say whether the negotiations were successful or not.”

Lucas also opened up to the outlet about the backlash he’s felt to the “Star Wars” prequels. It’s no secret that many die-hard fans of the franchise feel those movies betrayed them, and he says it’s that sentiment that caused him to step away from being a director.

“It was fine before the Internet,” Lucas says. “But now with the Internet, it’s gotten very vicious and very personal. You just say, ‘Why do I need to do this?'”

J.J. Abrams is directing “Star Wars: Episode VII,” which is expected in theaters in 2015.
