Yes, it’s true. Geraldo Rivera did in fact appear on “FOX & Friends” Friday (March 22) morning and blame a hoodie for the tragic shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Martin is the unarmed high school student who was shot and killed by a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain who perceived Martin — who was wearing a hoodie with the hood up — as a threat.

“I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters, particularly, to not let their young children go out wearing hoodies,” says Rivera. Really. “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.”

Later in the day, points out The Washington Post’s Eric Wemple, Rivera stood by his contention when a caller to his radio show suggested that the hoodie comment resembled blaming rape victims for wearing a short skirt:

“It’s different because the sexy girl … is no threat to anybody. If you see a girl dressed in a provocative way, she’s no danger to you,” says Rivera. “If you see someone in a hoodie … you’re going to walk to the other side [of the street].”

On Friday, even President Obama waded into the Martin case saying every avenue of investigation needs to be fully investigated and, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.”

We’re going to assume he means hoodie and all.

Rivera’s comment also inspired the tumblr page Geraldo in a Hoodie which is, as advertised, pictures of Rivera wearing various hoodies.
