large croc reuters Giant crocodile captured in Philippines; Beast is 20 feet long and weighs more than a tonIn a scene the late Steve Irwin would be proud of, a 20-foot saltwater crocodile was captured in the Philippines over the weekend.

The animal, weighing 2,370 pounds and estimated to be 50 years old, required approximately 100 people to yank it from a nearby waterway. The event took place in Bunawan township, a small farming village in the southern end of the island chain.

To catch the animal, the team led by wildlife official Ronnie Sumiller, set 20 steel cable traps baited with animal carcasses.

While the capture is a relief to many, since a large crocodile is thought to have killed two people including one child, Sumiller isn’t convinced this 20-foot croc is the culprit. He believes there are more beasts where this one came from.

“There is a bigger one,” Sumiller ominously tells The Associated Press.

Guinness World Records has the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity as a 18 footer in Australia.

Local officials expect that the newly captured animal to be “the biggest star” in a nature park.
