gillian anderson getty Gillian Anderson reveals lesbian relationship in high schoolGillian Anderson is gearing up to tackle one of Charles Dickens’ most famous novels for the BBC adaptation of “Great Expectations,” which airs in the U.S. on PBS April 1. As part of her promotion of the movie, she gave an interview to Out magazine, where she reveals a relationship she had in high school with a girl.

She tells Out she was voted “Most Bizarre” and “Most Likely to Be Arrested” in high school, which she says were “based on how I chose to look, dress, behave, you know–the relationships I was in
at the time were freaking people out … I was in a relationship with a girl for a long time when I
was in high school.”

“If I had thought I was 100% gay, would it have been a different
experience for me? Would it have been a bigger deal if
shame had been attached to it and all those things that become huge
life-altering issues for youngsters in that situation?” wonders Anderson. “It’s possible
that my attitude around it came, on some level, from knowing that I
still liked boys.”

She adds later, “I don’t think I’ve ever followed convention by choice,” she says. “By default, maybe, but not by choice.”

“Great Expectations” premieres Sunday, April 1 on PBS.
