Beck’s company, Mercury Radio Arts, and Fox News announced a new deal Wednesday (April 6) in which Beck will “transition off of his daily program” later this year. He’ll continue to work with Fox News, though, developing and producing other TV projects and content for the channel’s digital platforms.

Beck’s show is one of the most-watched in all of cable news, averaging 2.2 million viewers in its two-plus years on Fox News. But his controversial brand of news commentary has also cost him advertisers; as TV Newser puts it, “Beck’s much-reported troubles with the advertising community are believed to play a role in the decision” to leave.

He still has a daily radio show and a multimedia empire, so he’s hardly disappearing from the media landscape.

“Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anybody’s standards,” Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes says. “I look forward to continuing to work with him.” Beck returns the compliment, saying, “I cannot repay Roger for the lessons I’ve learned and will continue to learn from him, and I look forward to starting this new phase of our partnership.”

There’s no word on who gets custody of the chalkboard.
