chris christie weight loss surgery Gov. Chris Christie's secret weight loss surgery: He did it for his wife and kidsNew Jersey Governor Chris Christie has never been shy about talking about his weight — he even let loose with some of his favorite “fat jokes” when he appeared on “Letterman” back in February.

But now it turns out he secretly had lap-band surgery done several months ago, as first reported by the New York Post and confirmed to CNN.

“I’ve struggled with this issue for 20 years. For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them,” Christie tells the Post.

Of course, speculation about a 2016 presidential run has already made its way into the story, but Christie says it’s about more than that.

“It’s so much more important than that. I know it
sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the
grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary Pat and the kids and
going, ‘I have to do this for them, even if I don’t give a crap about
myself,'” says Christie.

Christie has also squashed talk that he’s not healthy or that he can’t effectively do his job while being overweight.

At a press conference in February, Christie said, “In terms of people in the state being concerned about whether or not it prevents me from being able to do my job effectively, I think they’ve seen the results of that.”

There’s no word as to just exactly how much weight Christie has lost so far. In the above pictures, the right is Christie before the surgery and the left is the governor on May 2.
