While plenty of Grammy Awards attendees donned their finest formal black for the 2012 ceremony, there was no shortage of strange fashion statements, either. And shockingly, none of the red carpet’s most outrageous moments came from Lady Gaga (who skipped the carpet altogether).
The most bizarre dress of the night clearly belongs to Nicki Minaj, who donned some sort of red nun/cardinal outfit and hired an old man dressed as the Pope to enter with her. The outfit was custom-designed Vercace, and reportedly had something to do with her performance of “Roman Holiday” later that night. How very Gaga of her.
Robyn is one of our favorite artists, and since she’s so reliably strange, fashion-wise, it didn’t really surprise us that she busted out her best mullet-like dress (business in the front, party in the back!) and platform workboots for the Grammys this year. Trust us, it’s not the weirdest she’s gotten.
Fergie made our worst-dressed list too, but we’re really just weirded out by the see-through Gaultier. Would’ve been a slam dunk if she, say, wore a slip underneath.
A pair of lesser-known artists also wore some strange get-ups to the 54th Grammy Awards. Russian-born singer Sasha Gradiva donned what would’ve been a perfectly normal light pink gown, if not for the machine gun arm piece. (Insert “right to bear arms” joke here.) Meanwhile, songwriter Bonnie McKee (she’s co-written Katy Perry hits “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream” along with tunes for Taio Cruz, Britney Spears and others) rocked a space-age dress with some bizarre yellow fringe sleeves.
